Why can't I choose my X account to leave a comment from?

Overview

You may notice limitations on which X (formerly Twitter) accounts you can select to leave comments or replies on a post. This article explains the recent changes from X that affect this functionality.

New Restrictions on Replies as of 2/25/2026

To improve the quality of conversations and reduce spam, X has updated their API policies regarding how third-party applications handle replies.

We can no longer leave comments from an account unless one of the following conditions is met:

  1. Post Author: The account leaving the comment is the same account creating the post.

  2. Explicitly Tagged: The account has been explicitly mentioned (tagged) in the original post by the author.

  3. Quote Tweet: The post is a quote tweet of a post belonging to the account.

If none of these conditions are met, the option to comment from that account may be unavailable or the attempt will be rejected by X with this error

Creating posts with @mentions is not allowed for your access package. In replies to conversations you are part of, you may only @mention users who are already participants in the thread.

Why X made this change

X introduced these restrictions to prevent unsolicited programmatic replies and automated spam. By ensuring that replies are only permitted when there is an explicit interaction (like a mention or quote), X aims to keep conversations relevant and high-quality.
